What matters most

How to choose

Fit matters more than features. A pack that fits your torso and hips carries heavy loads comfortably; one that does not will hurt within hours.

Volume

Daypacks: about 15-30 L. Overnight to two nights: 35-50 L. Three nights or more: 50-70 L. Lighter, compact gear lets you go a size smaller.

Fit

Measure your torso length from the bony bump at the base of your neck to the top of your hip bones and choose the matching size; many packs adjust. The hip belt should carry most of the weight, sitting on top of the hip bones.

Features worth having

A rain cover or water-resistant fabric, a hydration sleeve, side pockets you can reach while walking, and a ventilated back panel for hot weather.
