How to choose coolers & fridges
What to look at before you buy, with facts from the 88 coolers & fridges we compare from 5 stores. Updated October 28, 2026.
What matters most
- Hard coolers: compare ice retention (days), capacity in quarts and the empty weight.
- 12V fridge coolers need no ice; check power draw and whether they can run from a power station or car.
- Wheels and strong handles matter for anything over about 45 quarts when full.
How to choose
For a weekend, a good passive cooler and ice is enough. For longer trips without hookups, an electric compressor fridge saves buying ice every day.
Passive coolers
Ice retention depends on wall insulation, the lid seal and how you use it. Pre-chill the cooler, use block ice (it lasts longer than cubes), keep drinks in a separate cooler that is opened often, and keep it in the shade. Rotomolded coolers hold ice for several days but are heavy and expensive.
Thermoelectric coolers
Plug-in thermoelectric coolers only cool to about 30-40 °F below the air temperature and draw power constantly. They suit short drives, not hot campsites.
12 V compressor fridges
Compressor fridges work like a home fridge, can freeze, and use far less energy - typically 15-40 W on average over a day in warm weather. Dual-zone models keep a fridge and a freezer side. Check the low-voltage cut-off setting so it does not drain the car battery.
Size
As a rough guide, about 10-15 quarts (10-15 L) per person for a weekend, more for longer trips or when ice takes up part of the space.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a thermoelectric cooler for hot weather.
- Leaving a cooler in the sun in the car.
- Running a fridge from the starter battery without a low-voltage cut-off.
